Frequently asked questions
Which version does this page describe?
This page describes version 1.1, prepared for App Store review. The current App Store release is an earlier journal-only version. Focus and the revised premium features are available only after version 1.1 is approved and released. Purchases take place in the app through Apple.
How do the free trial and lifetime purchase work?
The app offers an optional 7-day free trial of Focus mode and iCloud sync. Choose Start Free Trial in the app and confirm through Apple to begin. The verified Apple transaction establishes the original trial period; restoring it does not restart the trial. You are not automatically charged. Only Focus mode and iCloud sync require the optional lifetime unlock after the trial. Creating, editing, reading, exporting, and using local media remain free without a time or entry limit. The intended price is ¥30 in mainland China or US$5.99 in the United States; Apple shows the final local price before you confirm.
All manual Focus operations require an active trial or lifetime unlock, including stopping a session, disabling or deleting a group, clearing restrictions, and revoking authorization from inside the app. Configured timer and schedule endings continue automatically. An individual can manage or revoke personal Screen Time authorization in iOS Settings. Trial expiry or a refund does not erase local journal data or existing cloud copies.
How do I restore a purchase?
Use Restore Purchases in the app while signed in to the Apple account used for the original purchase. Restoration requires an eligible Apple purchase and may require a network connection. If it is missing, check your Apple purchase history and email us with the app version and a description of the issue. Do not send payment card details or your Apple account password.
Is this a subscription?
No. The lifetime unlock is a single, non-consumable in-app purchase. There is no recurring subscription charge. Apple handles billing and purchase confirmations. Refund requests are handled through Apple’s Report a Problem service under Apple’s rules and applicable law.
Where are Focus, purchase, and iCloud settings?
During first setup in version 1.1, choose two different passcodes: a diary passcode and a management passcode. Both open the journal. The diary passcode or Face ID opens ordinary mode, which does not show premium settings. Enter the management passcode at the app lock to open privacy mode. In Settings, Purchase & Trial lets you start the Apple-verified trial, purchase the lifetime unlock, or restore an eligible purchase.
With verified premium access, privacy mode also shows Focus Management and iCloud Sync. Focus Management asks for the management passcode again. Using a local passcode alone never grants premium access or replaces Apple’s Screen Time authorization. We do not provide a universal management passcode or a remote password reset.
Focus uses Apple’s individual authorization for the device owner, or child authorization approved by an eligible parent or guardian. Personal authorization can be revoked in iOS Settings. Management passwords do not override Apple’s system rules or make this app impossible to remove.
Where are my entries and attachments stored?
Journal text and metadata are saved on your device for free. With an active premium trial or lifetime unlock, explicitly enable iCloud sync on each device to sync through your private Apple CloudKit database. Use the same Apple account on each device.
Photos, recordings, videos, and document attachments use a separate optional media sync setting, off by default. In Inkling’s settings, open iCloud Sync and enable media sync on each device. Media attached to saved entries is copied through your iCloud Drive; downloaded files remain cached locally. Drafts and files used only by an unsaved draft remain on the device where you write them.
Check the iCloud Sync page for upload and download status. Make sure iCloud Drive is enabled, storage is available, and the devices have a network connection; use Check Sync to retry. An entry’s text can arrive before its media, and a file may need time to download before it opens. Allow changes to finish syncing before editing the same entry on another device. Keep independent copies of important content.
How do I change the app language?
Inkling follows the app language selected in iOS. In the app’s settings, open App Language to reach the system settings, or go to iOS Settings, find Inkling, and choose a preferred language where offered. The app supports ten languages. Your own journal text is never automatically translated.
Can I recover a forgotten journal passcode?
We cannot recover your passcode or bypass the journal lock. Supported system authentication may allow access if it was enabled and remains available. Keep your passcode somewhere safe; deleting and reinstalling the app is not a recovery method and may remove local data.
Do I have to allow photos, microphone, or location access?
No. You can write text entries without these optional permissions. Grant access only for a feature you choose to use. Location recording can also be switched off in the app; doing so does not remove locations already stored in existing entries.
What happens to drafts and deleted entries?
Drafts remain on the device where you write them. Deleted entries can be managed in the app’s trash and restored there until permanently deleted. Permanent deletion cannot be reversed from the app.
Turning off media sync preserves local files and existing iCloud Drive copies. Deleting an entry or cleaning up a local file does not automatically remove its cloud media copy, so another device or draft can still use it. Manage those copies with Apple’s iCloud storage controls. Text and metadata changes, and system backups, follow Apple’s sync progress and your settings.
What happens if I change my Apple account?
Media sync pauses when the Apple account changes. You must confirm before the current device’s saved journal media is uploaded to the newly selected account. Copies in the previous account remain there. Local files are preserved.
Can I use Inkling on a Mac?
The Mac Catalyst version is currently being tested. This website does not provide a released macOS download. Supported iPhone and iPad builds use the same Apple account for iCloud sync.
How can I report a problem?
Email carey@takumi.pub with your device model, operating system version, app version, and the steps that caused the issue. A screenshot with private information removed can help. Do not send your passcode, Apple account password, complete journal, or payment card details.
